To start the year, we learned about making our "mark" by reading "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds and creating our own dots to share with the community of Memorial School. Next, we made unique fish as a response to the book, "Only One You" by Linda Kranz where we learned that it is o.k. to be yourself. We moved into shape making and color mixing with projects like "Shapes & Color" where students traced and overlapped shape templates to make cool designs where they colored in the new shapes that were created when overlapped. This project was inspired by the book, "When a Line Bends, A Shape Begins" by Rhonda Gowler Greene and James Kaczman. We followed this up with a video about the color wheel and a quick exercise where we blended primary colors to create new, secondary colors. This was a precursor to one of our favorite projects of the year, "Imagined Creatures" where we mix primary color tempera paints to make secondary colors on the paper. Later, we used markers to add details and personality to their creatures. At the end of October we read the book "Glad Monster, Sad Monster" by Ed Emberley and Anne Miranda to learn about colors and their connection to feelings. The last slide is from our "Extra Art" CPT where we created fun and collaborative artworks, like Emojis, Self-Portraits or Towns they worked together to create to take home. It has been a wonderfully productive and creative first two months in the Art Room. I'm looking forward to more great artwork to share.
